Leadership Camp.

After nearly two years of building relationships, studying and getting to know our current grade 6 students, it has finally came down to that time of the year again were we as a school have to select our new leaders for next year. This year we held our leadership camp at the YWAM base and the training lasted for two days. This training was designed to build and evaluate the students based on servant hood characters, attitudes during challenges, teamwork and confidence. Our Theme was Becoming imitators of Christ which was based on Matthew 20:28. With the help of Katenda, who was our guest speaker and teacher, the Lord used his teachings to search our hearts and to humbly consider what a true leader ought to be like as we studied the life and the example of Jesus Christ, the greatest role model of servant-leadership.  This was also an opportunity for us the staff and speakers to serve and live out the very words we were teaching. Many of our students comes from broken homes or grew up with less-than-ideal role models and like many of us they bought into the lies of this world concerning leadership. Instead of serving, we want and sometimes demand to be served.

Of all the many camps I have been to as both a camper and a staffer, this one was one of my all-time favorite! It was more personal than any other camp I have ever attended and it felt much more like a family.  It was a dream come true or more of an answered prayer. I have hoped for so long to have all my children in one place with me, far away from the distractions and norms of their everyday lives. Many deeply appreciated and enjoyed a time away from home. Many were thankful to sleep in a bed alone for the first time and the girls dearly valued their first time of privacy. I personally loved the sense of family and valued it even more during meal times and devotions. I have so many highlights from this camp; every moment was really exciting beyond belief. We have been praying for God to rise up great leaders this year and trusted Him to point out those students during the camp and He surely did. He faithfully and clearly answered those prayers. Some of those students would probably not be many people’s first choice but their characters, practicing of the Word, their love and concern for others stood out clearly and not only during the whole training but also in the past one  year and ten months that I have known them personally. These are the kind of leaders we have been praying for. Though God specifically appoints certain people as leaders, the call to serving and imitating Christ applies to us all as Christians.
